The only difference I could detect was when traffic slowed,my vehicle wanted to coast quickly forward when I let off the pedel,moreso than usual. I was getting tense with the brake pedel,visability was hampered so I gave up for a possible minor fuel savings. Some things are foolish for various reasons for the sake of minor mileage improvements,no tailgating but the blocked visability was a tense situation for me.Larger tires put on the rear was a better idea so that I could be driving down-hill always....LOL

The draft occurs but I think only a taller robust higher type vehicle following close maybe would benefit,just an asumption on my part.Vehicles with very low pavement hugging aerodynamics,skirting,bottom panels would seem to provide good drafting effects for followers. All of the above is high risk endeavors,which can get you lighted-up,flashed,costing some time embarrasment,frowns instead of smiles etc.

Usually they run near the speed limit,some about 3 mph above,that is where I set my cruise,then leave ample distance,for a better view angle,steady speeds. Sure other drivers will bare down behind,then follow for a few trivial seconds,maybe exiting or soon will pass and gain a higher speed.Seldom is it necessary to mess with the cruise setting,only if the semi ahead comes upon a slower vehicle ahead and may wait to change lanes to pass also. Still if a strong headwihd prevails the large truck ahead shunts the force off my vehicle to some extent with-out the draft benefit,and my mileage improves.Deflecting the headwind by a % I feel helps a lot,at times you can tell by the go pedel easing down if you break over into the other lane,the C C.. hammers the pedel to correct extra wind resistance.

When the temps drop over night to the 20s F have a friend measure the Battery voltage before starting the vehicle after sitting overnight. Readings might read 9.75 - 11.25 volts below 10 volts, problems can start when the outside temps drop further,because when the starter is cranking,that battery voltage is pulled down,under extra load,often upsetting the vehicles other functions. Being a past hot dry Summer,some batteries have shown a low cell fluid starved condition,causing battery failure,due to evaporation of liquid acid. It pays to have that checked first. Never jump start with-out safety glasses on,same if cleaning up the terminals,any raw gasoline smells coming off engine area unseen maybe, clear that area and get PRO HELP!

When you go back to the go pedel count that as two,pause till this happens again while keeping track counting. As your trip ends make a pencil notation at the days ending start adding your notes,get Happy and compare them to another day V/S excess fuel burned. You may improve, with-out blaming the vehicle, lowering the count is improvement while saving fuel $$ as a result.... GLk !

Using the LJ's as a single chain link around the tire area. Again when the coast is clear try backing out of stuck area in recent wheel tracks,using the L-johns as a traction device,avoid excessive high speed spinning of the drive wheels, just maybe a Tow truck won't be necessary,and the cost for a lost pair of L-Johns only minimal. This tip is only for the most determained hard core DIYer wearing winter LJ's and if they lack snow driving experience. Hint; if any form of utility tape is in the trunk,fold the loose ends of the tied knot(if being a single one) together like a pair of rabbit ears (antenna style)wrap that tape,many rounds around the loose ends tightly secured to prevent knot from coming loose,spin away free.....or call for help. Time involved twenty min.---30 at most for DIY setup. LOLuck! EMG flashers on of cource!

Recently I gave assistance to my Son when he was changing both front WD spindle drive hub bearings,PT cruiser,2nd owner,work vehicle getting noisy. This eliminated a possible sieze-up,later. I lost an outer front spindle hub bearing on a older classic Che..truck,which previous owner changed engine oil/filter every 1500 miles,at 55,000 I had installed a performance cam/other goodies. That engine was as clean inside as a 2000 miler but the R-F bearing gave up life after 56,000 miles during city driving it turned color blue from heat stress, with very little warning (smoke trail) So....

Often they forget that after slowing for any traffic reason,the resume rate of go-pedel pressure also consumes a high rate of fuel >> to re-accelerate,by the vehicle being in a higher tranny gear the engine must develope way more torque to then resume cruise speed. This is often forgotten,its understandable because the reason/cause is the physical laws governing things on the planet/Earth,and then drivers don't always drive and think about physics at the same time affecting their vehicles motion. Only when the vehicles starts to roll backwards when stopped on a slight unlevel surface. LOL History but not always funny.... To resume takes extra energy,that's the phrase/action that is often forgotten about for saving fuel,watching Brake lights ahead is the secret cure!(Takes more effort than one would think) to correct,and gain MPG.$ $ I think of paying more attention of the ahead traffic source then getting a jump on that situation,refering to the right foot control with your vehicles,the ... /... pedels acordingly... That's it,secret solved! LOLuck!

Those tests work on any vehicle/owner combined, CB radio chatter tells alot and eliminates the guessing.

Excitment....? Too many Blessings maybe? I'll go for the good weather.... maybe that's it! On the cheap side greater distance between vehicles will save more than just fuel,yes weather does have a lot to do with that also. HAGDay... Packs meaning > Too Dam Close! Drama at its best! Saving What?........

I see your point on higher rear tire inflation,I do that mainly with the pick-up,keeping a higher pressure up front normaly,then bringing the rear up even higher fo being loaded.not exceeding the max tire rated pressure (hot checked)on pressure for the longer trip. As the day heats up ordinarily driving highway, I may take a second pressure check at the rear,no problems still.....

If you're going to change tire pressures to get better mileage, you would increase inflation on the front tires since they have more weight on them. A higher pressure on the front tires allows them to roll easier because they stay rounder. In fact it makes no sense to change tire pressures at all for trips vs. normal driving. The front tires should always have 3-4 pounds of additional pressure over the more lightly loaded tires in the back.

When I see red brake lights visable ahead < that signals me to let off the go pedel and slow,saving fuel to prevent a complete stopping of my vehicle,this breaks the bonds of Inertia,to gain on saving fuel per ground covered (distance by better mileage) VS cost to do so....Idle cost goes minium also. You then save,save more $ at the fuel pumps, "Works for me"... To get where you want to be monthly,the above practice will reduce your engines run time,that says savings to me....by Right foot control,your right foot....maybe ?! LOL

Often you will see one or more that looks a bit flatter,next time your vehicle is sitting in the parking lot compare yours for being uniform with each other. Just look it might save you some fuel,after checking all four for correct pressure.Maybe save a blow-out,or worse. All tires will show a slight bulge,but look for the exception,by comparison. Hints always welcom....
