LOVE MY METRO!

96, 1 liter, 3 cyl, 5 speed, 50 plus or minus mpg - worst 41.6 - best 56.1

Bought new in February of 96 with 3.6 miles on odometer. Just turned over 170,000. Time of purchase was commuting 54 miles one way to work and gas was around $1.20 per gallon. Traded 93 S-10 pickup for it straight up after some intense negotiations. After a few trips back and forth to work finally check tire pressures and discovered they only had 20 psi (worst mileage). Rounded tires out to even 32 psi in all & mileage jumped to 48 mpg on next tank.

Relatively maintenance free, oil and filter changes, tires, brakes (30,000 miles ago), front axles and an O2 sensor. Have new timing belt and will change soon.

Parts are cheap - 3 1/2 quarts oil to change and tires are quite economical, although more expensive than years past.

Never dreamed I would still be driving it 13 years later - but just like an energizer - keeps going and going . . . Don't see anything available to day that even comes close in comparison. Some what embarrassed it has a Chevrolet emblem on the hood.

I call it my covered motorcycle and get better mileage than most Harleys; I don't get wet when it rains.

Can't pass anything except gas stations. HAVE TO LOVE IT!

You're welcome, Skyjunky. Hope it helps.

Now, if anyone knows where to find the "reverse lights" wiring diagram for a 1991 Geo Metro, I would really appreciate it. The Haynes manual I have has everything BUT that. What a pain -- the bulbs are great, the lights just won't come on. Thanks in advance.

Geos are increasing in value. When I checked Edmunds for the trade in on a '91 Metro, it was a ridiculous $50. Now, the shell of a convertible, no top and no motor, is going for over $400 on eBay. A convertible in good shape recently sold for almost $5,000.

Hold on to your Metros, folks. It is going to be the most valuable car on the planet.

Peakster, the reason 35 mph isnt the best gas mileage is because when your going that slow your usually in the city where you spend alot of time stopped at lights and dont move at all while you are using gas. On the highway (55 mph and over) you dont stop so you get more miles per gallon. Going under 55 on the highway is dangerous if you ask me.

Gosh, I wish I still had my '91 Metro LSI 3cyl 5spd 5dr again. Bought it new and drove it everywhere. But I still have my '97 metro 3cyl 5spd Hb with air, so it's not all bad. I'm still looking for another as a backup.

I got an electronic device that reads the MPG instantaneously while driving my 1997 Geo Metro 3 cylinder 5 speed. These are the average MPGs for each speed in 5th gear with cruise control on (this was driving into a 15mph wind at 30*F):

75mph = 30mpg , 70mph = 34mpg
65mph = 38mpg , 60mph = 40mpg
55mph = 43mpg , 50mph = 48mpg
45mpg = 54mpg , 40mph = 60mpg
35mpg = 64mpg , 30mph = 59mpg

I just thought it was interesting to note that the best fuel economy isn't at 55mph, it's at 35mph!

I had one of these little gems in the early 90's when I was stationed in England. I had bought new from Army / Airforce Exchange Auto Sales. Well after a very exhaustive search I finally have one again. People have come to realize these were the most economical cars on the road in the 90's. They also realize that they just keep running and they are going for a premium over bluebook now. One was listed on Craigs list and the guy told me two men got in a bidding war in his driveway and he got $300 over his asking price! I picked up a 97' 5-speed and am getting 40+. The car fills up at around 7 gallons. Its been almost 10 years since I filled a car up under $20. I still have my Dodge Hemi, but my Metro is going to get a lot of use and TLC. Going from a large vehicle to this small one is actually a lot of fun to drive!!! By the way I'm told it only runs about $450 to buy a new Suzuki engine for these cars....I will defiantly go for a new Engine if it come to that!!!

I miss my 5-door '93 Metro 5-speed. It was fun to drive with its low center of gravity on the Chanhassen to Shakopee stretch of 101. Cars would cut me off and change into my lane a lot. I always felt like a motorcycle driver. Start seeing Metros.

I had a 1995 Geo Metro with a in line 3 banger one whole liter of displacement, I was a 5 speed and had the shift light. One day I drove 85 miles on the freeway using the shift lights as a guide to shift to. I traveled 85 miles on one gallon, I filled it up when I left and filled it up when I got to where I was going and it took one gallon.

My 1991 Geo Storm GSI has 145,000 miles and is great on gas compared to My Navigator. My Geo has never had any problems except for the waterpump till now but if anyone knows where I can find a clutch pedal spring please let me know.

Thank You

We have a '91 Metro with 151,940 miles on it and just put on four new tires for about $130 at Pep Boys. Unfortunately, the tires are discontinued, so we are going to have to get 13" rims instead of the 12" for the next set. Bummer. I love this car though -- it gets 47 MPG in all conditions, took me from NH to CA and back last year for $157 east to west and $195 west to east (gas prices went up during my stay), and still started in winter temps of 25 degrees below zero. I owned a Chevy Sprint ER (the Metro predecessor) before this (58 MPG rated and actual mileage), and also currently own a '93 Metro convertible. It doesn't get the mileage of the '91, but it's cute and gets the looks, and people are always complimenting it. These cars are and have always been underrated.

I've had 3 metros, a 92, 97, and now a 98. Got the 98 at 27K miles, paid $3500 for it, now has 74K miles, without effort I get 45 MPG delivering pizza. Oh, and it's a Chevrolet!

I had a 3-door 92 GEO Metro (3 cylinder). It was a great car to communte in as I steadfastly got 45 mpg )without using a/c. As long as you kept it off the Interstate is was ok, kinda dangerous out there with the larger cars....

Got 64 mph @ 50mph on the highway. never seen this before ....nextr fill up(topped off) I had to travel same route on the highway doing 80 mph and got the lowest of 36mpg. That sucks! so back to 50mph and letting every one pass , drafting on the big trucks at about 150' back.

I think you will soon see small cars like the metro & swift back on the market, but they will be more high end with a lot more creature features. Man you have to admit most of the metro & swift were about as econo as you can get. Some even with cardboard upholstery. I personally like the tracker & sidekick, I own a tracker and it is a great go getter, super on gas and so far no maintainence except the normal service after 50k miles. I would not travel the interstate in either one though! normal size cars and trucks would smash you like a used beer can. I drive a yukon for that! but 33 or 34 mpg in the tracker is sure nice.

My Metro has 145 80 R12's, the tires are so cheap my spare is a real tire instead of a dummy. You can try taking a spark plug out of yours, but I don't think it will help. :)

Also have a Geo Tracker 1990. Also love it. Other daughter drives it to school. About 30 miles to gallon. Soft top and have 400,000 kil on the motor. Still runs. Great in the summer with the soft top. Have to be carefull in the winter. A little scary on the icy roads. Should have good tires on this in winter. The four wheel drive feature is nice but remember it will still slide. Great small suv for price and not much breakdown problems.

I have a Geo metro con two door 3 cyl 5 speed best mileage I got was 65. Daughter now runs it to Idahoe and back to Canada. She loves it. Good mileage. Nice in the summer with the con. top. Got 200,000 kils on the motor still humming along. Just a little small inside but it makes up for it in gas.

My Tracker has the wrong size tires on it. it has 70R/15s, it should have 75R/15s by the book, Depending on tire manufacture 75Rs are 1 plus inches larger in diamater which should increase my gas milage a little more. I sure would like to get up there in that 40mpg range. Maybe I have one to many spark plugs.

I have a 92 Metro 2dr hatch, 3 cyl, 3 spd auto. My record mpg for it 48, I usually average 40-45, depending on how much city driving I do (most of my driving is highway back and forth to work). I only wish the car was the 5 spd standard or that the auto had another gear or overdrive.
