Chattanooga-made VW Passat sets mileage record

Chattanooga Times Free Press -- A Chattanooga-made, diesel-powered Passat has set a new mileage record on a single tank of diesel fuel as it traveled 1,626 miles, according to Volkswagen.

The trip in the standard, six-speed manual Passat from Houston, Texas, to Sterling, Va., averaged 84.1 MPG, or 4.65 cents per mile, the automaker said. The Australian couple are so-called mileage experts who work with car and tire companies and hold other records.

They said they carefully planned the route, traveling from Houston to Jacksonville, Fla., and then to Virginia using interstate highways over three days. They tried to keep the car in sixth gear when possible.

Also, they said they drove about 5 miles per hour below the speed limit in the Passat TDI featuring a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine running on ultra-low sulfur die

lot's more new diesel model's coming kinda soon, not soon enough though.
burn's clean now, big mileage, diesel nozzles @ about every station & growing. This should make a dent in barrels needed fairly soon.
Now just get lot's of bigger municipalities to start on CNG, get some bigger truckin' company's to try it on some big run interstates routes.
I believe that a quick solution to a growing problem, see what works best & grow from there. just my view, oh, motorcycles, light scooters runnin' around the citys = instant reduction.

Apparently you missed that part that said the car was built in Chattanooga? Last time I checked Tennessee is still part of the good old USofA, chunk. Or do you disavow those of us who are east of the big river?

Basically, there is no more foreign or domestic in the auto industry. Our "big three" build a lot of their cars offshore, and many of the "imported" cars are built in Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, etc. Are/were you aware that the car that the ubiquitous Ford Crown Vic - the police cruiser that was used almost everywhere - was an IMPORTED car? So much of the Vic was made in Canada that it was considered an import here. And for several years a while ago the best selling American-made car in Japan was....the Honda Accord - built in Ohio.

Yeah, and I've seen some guys make their own bio-diesel fuel. That would really save some costs.

As I have been saying... I will never buy another gas auto, its a European diesel for me from now on. Love my 6 cylinder Mercedes diesel, and I only get 42 mpg on the hwy. Just waiting for a Mercedes 4 cylinder to trade to.

Exxon Mobil's 2011 shares rose 20% and profits surged by 35% to 41.1 billion dollars!! Gross revenue jumped 28% to 452.9 billion dollars helping Exxon reclaim the top spot in Fortune 500 money list!! ---Exxon produces just about as much gasoline as it does crude oil-- thanks to the 35 billion dollar purchase of the XTO energy refinery in 2010!! All these gains were achieved by raising fuel prices!!---------Chevron , the 3rd highest money makers gross revenue rose to 245,621 billion dollars and 25% increase in revenue! This resulted in a 41% increase in profit to 26.9 billion dollars in 2011!! ---------Conoco Phillips finished in 4th place with gross revenue of 237,272 billion dollars in gross sales sucked out of the American economy!! When will our Congress intercede for the American consumer!! They need to hear the cry of the people and bring back the Sherman anti trust laws to control Big Oil!!

Great for professional mileage experts, but the average driver would never get anywhere close to that mileage.

I could never do it. The TDI is a drivers car with loads of torque right where you need it that makes it real tempting to be heavy with your right foot.
