High gas prices cause drivers to change habits

WNWO -- Fewer people are living life in the fast lane, or at least when it comes to driving on the highway, a new survey suggests.

According to AAA the rise in gas prices has caused a change in driving and lifestyle changes.

The survey finds 84% said they’ve changed their habits and 60% say the high prices have led them to combine trips and errands. It also found nearly 16% have purchased or leased a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Gasoline is now above $4 a gallon in four states and Washington, D.C., as a three-month surge in pump prices continues.

According to AAA and other pump-watchers, average gas prices are above the four-dollar mark today in Illinois, California, Alaska and Hawaii, in addition to the nation's capital.

Observing what and how people drive, I'd say gas is still cheap.

No more taken unnecessary trips. I've had to combine errands into one trip. The one I dislike is I don't go out and drive for pleasure any more.

I learned my lesson and made my changes back when George W. Bush was President. It was obvious at that time that the price of gas was going to keep zig-zagging to higher and higher levels.

I got rid of my car and now travel by bus and/or train.

Needless to say my travel costs are significantly lower and I don't have to worry about getting a huge fine because I traveled too fast, made an improper stop or turn, or parked in the wrong spot, etc.

This has been very liberating.

Maybe we should all quit our jobs and stay home and collect welfare, then we wouldn't have to worry about the price of gas. Let the government take care of us since they seem to know what WE want, and what is BEST for US.(sarcasm if you didn't notice)

This article, like most of them, say nothing about HOW people drive, such as staying within the speed limit and driving like there is a raw egg on the gas peddle. It also seems like many just want to blame it on the President and go on with their self justified habits and not taking any personal responsibility. Humm ...

Drive withing limits, drive small car, unless you are carrying lots of people which hardly any does. But happy atleast price rise is infusing sense in everyone.

I haven't changed my habits that much, even though the price of gas HAS DOUBLED SINCE OBAMA TOOK OFFICE. What I have done, is defer the taxes on much of my income so that I have the cash flow to pay for more expensive gas (milk, bread, etc.) and I am contributing less to the Treasury of this corrupt and misguided administration.

Another big hit for the economy. Just thinking about eating out automatically tells you that you shouldn't because you shouldn't drive! Just trying to stay home and ride out the storm. As long as gas prices keep rises, our economy continues to dig a deeper hole.

Fortunately, I drive only about 3500 miles a year, so the price of gas is not a burden.

Duhhh is right. Got rid of my SUV and got an affordable Civic and very happy getting around 38 mpg instead of 21mpg. Was sorry to get rid of it since was great being AWD for winter purposes but in the long run more money stays in my pockets instead of the big corporations.
