I agree with paulweb, "But according to the current regime, we are not paying enough for gasoline".

Higher gas prices more motorcycles on the road = more fatalities

gasokie I think you are confused...
As a M/C rider I have more than enough Insurance to pay for any damage I do to the other driver and or his vehicle. I'm sorry to inform you it's the Moron in the car talking on his cell phone that better have "Good" insurance when he hits me. I won't be collecting a dime from the taxpayers... but you can bet your "Bippy" my wife and my lawyer will be collecting every penny they can from the driver and the insurance company of someone that hits me. I know a number of paralyzed people that are being supported by the taxpayers... however their injuries were not from a motorcycle....It was from serving in the Military.... and I as a taxpayer, believe they earned every penny they get and then some.

I have no objections) to the bikers but wish they would make 'em buy lots of insurance. It cost a lot to maintain a paralyzed motorcycle rider for 40 or 50 years as they just lay there on the taxpayer's dime.

And then there's the suicidal California vehicle code rule that allows motorcyclists to split lanes. You know, when the traffic is going slow the motorcyclist can drive between the vehicles on the lane stripes doing whatever death-defying speed they want. We call them organ-donors.........

defensive driving is 100% what the bike riders must do. HEADLIGHTS are a must and I see so many riders without the headlight on. I'm a bike rider and yet there have been times when in my car that I don't see a rider until the last minute. So it's all about the rider being aware of everything and everyone.

Not to mention bikes driving in weather conditions they may have opted out of and the inexperienced drivers that needed to save a buck.

Hey capriceWagon, don't let this article stop you from having a bike. take a defensive motorcycle class. they teach you how to handle a bike, how to lay it down if the situation occurs. what to look for in traffic. all the good stuff. plus they help you pass the license exam. a must class to take.

thats right learn from others; it might save your life. And for Timons, you are right. you would think that the NHTSA and the GHSA would include that in the article. another words, instead... this article says speed also kills. think about it.

Unfortunate.
A question - what proportion of those motorcyclists who perished has recently started to drive a motorcycle - due to high gasoline prices?

I was thinking about getting a bike, but I think my life is more valuable than a few dollars saved on gas. You're really putting your life in the hands of all the other morons on the road.

Gas goes up more people buy motorcycles to spend less on gas therefore more inexperienced motorcycle drivers on the road which equals more motorcycle fatalities.

Old news but as I said before, it's to be expected. People use bikes to save gas bucks - and pay with their lives. Bikes are harder to see by drivers and drivers (unfortunately) don't care. Plus the added risk - if there is an accident, the biker has no chance, or very little, of survival.

It's interesting that during 2010, motorcycle deaths kept on going down while gas prices kept on going up. How do you explain that?

You have to be extra careful on a bike. LtRTH is right, you have to assume that no one sees you.

I'll say it again. You have to drive a bike like no one else on the road sees you. Defensive driving to the max.
