Vehicle black box requirement may start with 2015 model year

GasBuddy Blog -- Motorists- beware. A U.S. Senate transportation bill (S. 1813) is currently being negotiated in the U.S. House and Senate, and the Senate recently inserted a provision in the bill that would mandate the use of black boxes in all vehicles starting with the 2015 model year.

While this may not mean much for some motorists, it's a sign of what's coming: more government insight into how you drive your vehicle. According to The Newspaper, "Under text of S. 1813, also known as MAP-21, the information stored on an event data recorder could be retrieved under a court order "in the furtherance of a legal proceeding," by employees of the Department of Transportation in the event of an accident, and by anyone "for the purpose of determining the...

Well, that's enough for me to get out the horse and buggy. It's a sad time when every aspect of our life is under scrutiny.

Ah yes, I can see it now. Speedlimit signs with their beacons sending signals to your black box of the speed limit..the little black box telling the speed monitor gadget you're speeding, a speeding ticket waiting your arrival at home..via email of course. And if you don't pay it another computer turns your car off. I can see more, but I don't want to look....

honda0105 points out:

"I don't use OnStar, but the data still needs to be stored SOMEwhere for it to be mined in the world of Big Data."

You don't suppose, do you, that GM stores the data that it receives? At the very least, it needs to "store" the data for maintenance and warranty determinations.

There is no point in "selling" data that you haven't collected, so its no surprise that GM "stores" this information, and then resells it. GM admits that it "collects" the data, which must mean storing it. Probably, GM has its own programmers mining its database with an eye to reducing warranty costs, and to help sell more fleet vehicles to law enforcement agencies.

The Nissan Leaf also breaks new ground, making all of its data available wirelessly to the world.Wikipedia on OnStar

honda0105 cautions:

"Esquirrel: but it only does so for about the last 1 - 2 minutes, IIRC. The way I understand the article, there will be a lot more data points stored."

Existing OnStar systems report data wirelessly; they don't need to store a lot of data.

Existing Volt and Leaf models broadcast data in real-time.

Before you get too excited about this story, you should know that your present vehicle ALREADY HAS A "BLACK BOX" IN IT.

If your vehicle is equipped with air bags, this black box is already in your car, and yes, its data is used to determine how you were driving, typically, just before an accident. The only real change coming will be to make the data more readily available to "authorities". Do you have a GM car equipped with OnStar? Even if you turn "off" this service, it still reports....

"does that mean, you get tickets by going over the speed limit even if there's no cop around?"
Sure, and since they already have your financial info, the system will just auto-bill you, and then forward the info to your insurance company and credit bureaus.

Scary stuff... the minute cops begin downloading my driving history and assessing fines after the fact, is the minute I sell my car and ride the bus - it will be much cheaper!

Price alert- price alert-- price alert--- Speedway/Marathon's gas czar has just fixed the new price at $3.89.9 cents per gallon in the Great Lakes States!! This at a time when crude oil prices are10.00 dollars lower than a week ago! This is nothing more than profiteering and price gouging at the American consumers expense!! It is just like shaking the proverbial money tree as the price goes up the money fall from the tree--our wallets-- and into the profit margin of Big Oil --- Congress help us by putting controls on the big Oil monopoly in America!

I just won't buy a new car... will buy pre-black box... New Camaros already have them as I understand it.... according to a report on a fatality accident here in the KC,MO area a couple years back.. It was determened that he was traveling (drunk) 120mph before slammed into a car carrying a young woman and killed her and seriously injured another in the care. He was hardly hurt. He plead guilty recently to manslaughter and is serving his time.
I am sure there will be those who learn how to disable them.. and share the info

Big brother and the insurance companies love this one - it is bad enough that Progressive has their system, but at least that is voluntary and the consumer can vote wiht one's pocketbook.
NOT ANY LONGER!! With red-light cameras, speeding cameras, general area cameras, cell phone tracking, there will be nowhere the normal citizen will be able to go without being tracked and monitored!
