Americans spending a bit more as gas prices fall

AP -- WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans are starting to see some relief from higher gas prices, a change that could revive the economy in the months ahead.

Consumer prices were flat in April, largely because of a decline in gas prices. Lower prices at the pump may be combining with steady job growth to power more spending on big purchases.

Sales of autos, furniture and electronics all rose in April. And Americans spent more at restaurants and bars — generally a sign of confidence in the economy.

"Consumer spending looks to have started the second quarter on a solid footing," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

Despite the strength in key areas, overall retail sales increased just 0.1 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That modest gain followed two stronger

I wish I could write like this.

Let's see the price of gas is falling.
So people should be spending less on gas, so they can spend MORE on anything else.

AND that means that they should be doing more traveling on Memorial Day!

AND having a bit more cash in thier pocket.

There, did I cover it all?

Somehow I'm not getting that a 0.1% increase in retail is cause for celebration. Nothing suggests a trend here or that gas isn't still too high. If they can say the same by August...maybe.

We can spend it on food or fuel. When the price of fuel drops a little and I do mean A LITTLE, then we can spend the left over twelve cents on something else.

Sorry, but the twenty-five cents cheaper gas price has not changed my spending habits. Gas here is still $3.74 a gallon, far from a discount bargain.

Watch out your spending. Spending on gas or on other goods are risky this time.

Gas prices have dropped in Tucson a whopping NICKEL in the past month and I don't see that anyone is truly better off than at any time in the past several years after being plundered by big oil, the banks during the mortgage scandal, the massive job losses, and despondent people leaving the workforce due to lack of perspectives, and record student loan defaults,...and a record number of people on food stamps.

So retail sales were up one tenth of one percent. WHOOPEE!!!
