Diesel prices hit highest level in more than four years, says EIA

Logistics Management -- Diesel prices hit their highest level in more than four years this week, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The average price per gallon of diesel increased 5.6 cents to $4.15 per gallon. This is the highest price since the week of August 18, 2008, when prices were $4.207 per gallon. And it marks the second straight weeks prices have gone up—following last week’s 1.5 cent gain—which was preceded by two weeks of declines.

Prior to that diesel prices were up for 11 consecutive weeks through the week of September 17, during which time prices rose a cumulative 48.7 cents. On an annual basis, prices are up 34.9 cents.

Modern diesel is highly refined and has a very low sulfur content. Air pollution from diesel engines is much less than it was a generation ago. Progress has its price, in this case higher fuel cost.

About 25 years ago we built a woodshed with two bays, 6 cords each. We use from the east bay one year and from the west bay the next year, then fill each again during the summer after it was used. Thus we always have wood that has been in the dry for over a year. It makes winter so much easier to deal with.

If you want more diesel, you need to refine more barrels of crude and hence the higher cost.

Heating oil is up but the firewood was not covered over before the wet Sept & Oct up here in Maine. Going to be an expensive winter for the first time in years. Lesson learned to get next years wood cut and split over this winter. Hoping the snow does not get above 2 feet deep in the woods.

It was cheap, being a by-product. But...some cars went diesel and just to spite them, BIG OIL made the prices soar overnight. And then. They never went down.

It's in high demand over there and commands a high price. However it's not taxed as heavily as gasoline so that just means bigger profits for Big Oil.

Lowest price is at 3.99. No good reason for the spike. That is not new. The casino (market) does what it wants without reason.

But now the maximum limit is 15 ppm of sulfur, so the refining process is much more complicated (and expensive). Besides, the price of something is not based on the cost of production, but on the point where supply and demand are in balance. At each refinery, the amount of gasoline and diesel produced from each barrel of crude is a fixed ratio, within a very narrow range. So, to get more gasoline, they have to produce more diesel and other distillates, and vice versa. At this time of year, when demand for gasoline is down, refiners do not like to produce surplus gasoline that they cannot sell and which it costs them to store. So the result may be a relative shortage of diesel, heating oil, jet fuel and other distillates. Remember that gasoline and distillate prices tend to vary seasonally as well, with distillate prices going higher in the fall and early winter, and gasoline prices going higher in the spring and early summer.
