Report: Obama's gas-mileage boost will save $69B a year

USA Today -- An environmental group released a report that predicts drivers will save an aggregate of $69 billion a year in fuel costs by 2030 because of new gas-mileage standards in cars.

How much will you save? The report points out that compared to a six-cylinder 2010 Ford Explorer, a four-cylinder 2012 Ford Explorer gets 7 miles more per gallon -- 23 mpg compared with 16 mpg) that can potentially save its owner $5,700 over five years of driving.

Since 2009, the number of compact and subcompact models getting better than 30 mpg has tripled, from five to 15. In that same period, the number of midsize vehicles getting better than 25 mpg has gone from six to 10 and the number of crossover vehicles getting better than 20 mpg has doubled from 16 to 32 models.

The higher the mileage, the more people will want to buy their product.

NRDC claimed $2K/vehicle. NADA claimed $5K (although they later retracted this, in a vague way). Clearly NRDC is pushing their agenda to lower the use of fossil fuel.

The market was demanding higher mpg vehicles anyway and automakers responding to the market, rather than government mandates, would have designed better and less expensive product.

I am also saddened by a federal government that ignores the constitution and passes laws that interfere with the free market and consumer choice. If you want a high-mileage vehicle, please go buy one. And with high fuel prices, that is the choice many are making. We don't need the federal government mandating what manufacturers build and dealers sell, at least not in a free country.

Among the states saving the most would be Texas ($7.8 billion), California ($7.3 billion) and Florida ($6.7 billion). Michigan would be in the top 20 with about $1.5 billion saved a year." They get the best gas mileage. Right? And all horses and mules would be bred by General Horse & Mule Company formally know as General Motors.
