I was really interested in the Ford Fusion until found out that it has a Japanese powertrain and chassis, essentially half or more Japanese. So much for buying American. Now I'm looking at the Chevrolet Malibu. So far, so good.

another useless article for us to comment on...ask first, who can afford a car, much less the taxes, insurance, maintainance, and gas to own one???
statistics like these can be interpreted in many ways and 75% of most americans do not have the ability to understand the difference!!!

If you read all of my earlier post, GasMizerAZ, you'll note that I agreed with you about the Fusion. I think it's a great car, both conventional and hybrid versions. But I also think that both GM and Chrysler have made some very good cars (and trucks) over the past nine or ten years. It seems that a lot of the folks on these boards believe that there are somewhere between zero and one domestic automaker who is capable of building quality vehicles, and I think GM and MOPAR deserve a little credit for the good things they've done - and continue to do, in spite of the government's rather heavy hand at their respective helms.

I've owned a lot of vehicles since I started driving (shortly after the demise of the buckboard and covered wagon, according to my wife) with a lot of different names on them. Most of them have been pretty good, overall, and there are only a few brands that I would flat-out refuse to park in my driveway.

I've dragged a trailer around for over 30 years. We used to be able to do that with a big station wagon (or some of the really big sedans - Cadillacs and Lincolns were pretty common in the campgrounds back then) but now it takes a truck. I've moved up from travel trailer to fifth wheel, so now I can't use the Suburban or Excursion (now THAT was a great hauler) so I've been forced into the pickup family. Three of us who get together often have all the brands covered - I have a Silverado, one friend has an F-350, and another has the Ram. All are Diesels, and all will tow anything you can attach to it.

Not saying that Ford isn't doing a good job. Just trying to put in a good word or two for the "other guys" in the game.

ShadowACE, the reason I sound like a Ford commercial is that the Ford Fusion is, along with the Prius, the best hybrid on the market. Also, Ford gained market share while GM, Chrysler and Toyota has lost market share. NO...I'm not a FoMoCo employee. I just know that Ford is doing all the right thing at the present. Now...if they can just figure a way to get rid of the UAW and CAW.

comet64 said, "If you notice the ones who took bailout money is ripping off the taxpayers by laying off employees and raising service fees "

I think you'll find that the layoffs and fees have been dictated by the new "management" at those companies, just like the decisions to eliminate some models and close many dealerships. They've made enough mistakes that there's no need to blame them for things that they didn't really do without a government gun to their heads.

Why this focus on new car sales? Why not develop products that improve mileage, reduce pollution, etc. that can be retrofitted locally on our used cars?

I agree with comet64/ Ford is the ONLY American manufacturer that DID NOT take Fed money and yet FORD is the one American manufacturer that had TWO models in the GREEN. The others were in the negative statistics.

seems funny to me that Chrysler, General Motors took government bailout money and claimed bankrupy. Ford did not take bailout and still running. If you notice the ones who took bailout money is ripping off the taxpayers by laying off employees and raising service fees

Kudos to VW - the Jetta was the only vehicle on the list to post a net sales gain over 2008 year to date! And if you drill down in those numbers it is b/c of the exceptional sales of the new clean diesel engine, which accounted for 28% (that's right over 1/4) of the Jetta sales so far this year. Who says american's like those battery driven cars (read, slow-brids)?

Wizrd03 said, "Seems like the vehicles selling are the ones that are the mileage winners"

You didn't really read the charts, did you? As I noted a few minutes ago, the TRUCKS (F-series, Silverado, and Ram) are the overwhelming winners in sales YTD. It's not even a little bit close. Do the math, or read my previous post (I did the math) and you'll see how wide the gap really is between the TRUCKS and the Camry/Accord/Focus(x2).
