Because the bottleneck is more acute at the south end.

Just more Odumbo playing the politics game trying to secure voters. What a waste of news coverage.

The construction of the southern section of the TransCanada Keystone XL oil pipeline was never in doubt. IT is the northern section of this pipeline that has been controversial.

Try to see the big picture, @abcdMA. Canadian oil is already making it's way to Cushing. It's coming by rail and enough of it is coming that Cushing doesn't know what to do with what they already have. Now, you want to ship them more?
This pipeline is 100% political and 100% stupid.

@clermont40 miles said,
"1) Fire BHO & Co.
2) Build the pipeline.
3) Produce.
4) Transport.
5) Repeat."
You forgot Step 6) Spill, spill, spill!

So, @rjoeh, if the President is out on his A--, as you so delicately put it, either way, then why should he approve the pipeline?

bvrbill was onto something when he said, "Sound like the southern section will be of use with out the full pipeline."
If Cushing is practically overflowing with oil backed up from the North, why do we even need to build the northern section of the pipeline? Seems like shipping the oil via railroad is bringing plenty of oil into Cushing as it is.

Interesting how Enbridge, the company that wants to build Keystone, said, “The Keystone XL pipeline will be the safest, most advanced pipeline ever built in North America, and no one has a stronger interest than our company and our employees in ensuring that it operates safely and reliably for decades to come,” continued Girling. “Each year we spend hundreds of millions of dollars on our North American energy infrastructure system to ensure long-term pipeline integrity and to take proactive preventive maintenance measures to keep things operating the way they are designed to.”
REALLY??? You dump 100,000 barrels of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River but we're just supposed to take you at your word that everything will be fine? REALLY???
Notice how they left out any mention of cost effectiveness? This pipeline will be built on the cheap and management will keep their fingers crossed that no slip-ups happen.

Eyewash. The permits for the southern portion were already in place and they'd announced plans to start building before Obama went anywhere near Cushing.
